In Luxembourg: Will everyone have to work eight hours on Sunday?

The government recently tabled a bill to extend Sunday work in commerce. In its opinion on the text, published this Tuesday, the Chamber of Commerce “welcomes” this decision, by which the government says it recognizes that “the world of work has significantly changed and that the regulation of Sunday work must reflect these societal changes “.

The Chamber of Commerce emphasizes that this involves “taking into account both changes in the lifestyle of employees (and consumers), the lengthening of travel times for employees called to work on Sundays, as well as increased organizational and competition problems faced by businesses.

The text tabled by the government is therefore “a step in the right direction”, in the opinion of the Chamber of Commerce. But remains insufficient, according to her. She “would like the generalization of normal Sunday working hours to eight hours to also cover industry, which faces the same concerns as commerce”, and “in order to help recover the degraded situation in this sector”.

The Chamber of Commerce proposes “a paradigm shift, in order to meet the expectations of businesses in terms of work organization and thus enable them to boost their productivity and maintain their competitiveness”. She wants to reform the article of the labor code which “poses a prohibition in principle for employers to make employees work” on Sundays, while there are “today many exceptions”.

According to the Chamber of Commerce, the principle must be “inverted”. According to her, we must “authorize work on Sundays as a matter of principle”, while keeping the legislation on working hours, a maximum of ten hours per day, and 48 hours per week, and retaining the 70% increase for Sunday work. .
