Scams linked to parcel delivery during the end-of-year holidays: Mondial Relay sounds the alarm

Around ten fraudulent sites have also been identified recently, while Mondial Relay sounds the alarm on these practices.

The parcel delivery scam: an increasingly common trap

As reported in Decemberthe package delivery scam is back in force as the holidays approach. With the increase in online shopping, cybercriminals pretend to be companies of delivery such as Mondial Relay or Chronopost in order to deceive users and steal their personal data.

The scammers’ modus operandi: urgent payment to unblock delivery

The mechanism of the scam is simple: Fraudsters demand urgent payment to complete the delivery of a package.

By claiming additional costs, often linked to customs, they encourage victims to provide their bank details under pressure. The promise? Receive their package before Christmas.

Once banking information is obtained, cybercriminals use it to carry out fraudulent transactions without the victims' knowledge.

Fraudulent SMS: another method of scam

Another variation of this Delivery scam is based on an SMS message claiming that “your package does not fit in your mailbox”. The message, supposedly sent by Mondial Relay, invites the victim to reschedule delivery in a relay pointfor a few euros.

To do this, simply click on a “delivery reschedule” button. It is at this moment that the trap closes, and the hackers recover the victims' banking information.

Advice from Mondial Relay to protect yourself from scams

Faced with this resurgence of scams, Mondial Relay recalls that the company will never ask you :

In addition, emails sent by Mondial Relay only come from addresses [email protected] or [email protected]and never suspicious addresses like@gmail.com.

Increased vigilance necessary during the holiday season

Phishing attacks and package delivery scams are especially common in December, when consumers are expecting multiple packages.

However, this type of scam is not limited to the holiday season: similar attacks were recorded as early as May. It is therefore essential to maintain constant vigilance throughout the year to avoid falling into the trap.

Fake delivery sites on the rise

Damien Bancal, cybersecurity expert and founder of the blog About yourecently identified a multitude of fake sites impersonating well-known delivery services such as Mondial Relay, Chronopost et Colissimo.

The majority of fraudulent sites spotted target Mondial Relay, with malicious URLs such as ma-livraison-mondialrelay.fr and suisui-mondialrelay.fr. These sites perfectly imitate the design of the official Mondial Relay website, in order to deceive users.

Fake sites pretending to be Chronopost were also identified, as chronopost-deliveryerr-repro.fr. These sites are often shared via SMS or emails, which increases their reach and effectiveness with victims.

How to protect yourself from package delivery scams?

To avoid falling into these traps, it is important to:

  • Check URL sites on which you make your purchases or track your deliveries.
Never click on links sent by SMS or email if you are not sure of their origin.
Never communicate your banking information in response to an SMS or email of this type.
Contact customer service directly of the delivery company via its official website or telephone number in case of doubt.

By being vigilant and following these best practices, you can protect your personal information and online payments from fraud attempts.
