Ecofees at Dollarama | Superior Court approves $2.5 million settlement in class action

The Superior Court of Quebec has approved a settlement of 2.5 million as part of a class action related to the use of eco-fees by Dollarama.

Environmental management fees, sometimes called eco-fees, are charged by retailers like Dollarama on items, such as electronics, light bulbs, batteries and toys, to help cover the costs of recycling.

The plaintiff represented by the law firm LPC Avocats alleged that Dollarama did not correctly display the price of products subject to eco-fees and charged a total price or eco-fees higher than those announced for these products or authorized by law.

As part of the approved settlement, Dollarama is not required to admit wrongdoing, but will fund Interac e-transfers of $3 to $10 for affected buyers.

Customers who purchased products subject to eco-fees from Dollarama between May 29, 2021 and July 4, 2023 are eligible for Interac e-Transfer.

Those who purchased products subject to eco-fees in Quebec between December 11, 2019 and July 4, 2023 are also eligible.
