The Renault 5 is already doing better than the Tesla Model Y and other Peugeot E-208s

Triggering smiles or astonishment is a first indication of the sympathy capital of a new automobile. The new Renault 5 is very good at this little game. From the first release of the show car in 2021 to the testing of this electric R5 that we have been driving for a few weeks, the enthusiasm has not waned. But, for Renault, this good reception must above all translate into sales, the sole judge of the peace for the future. However, on this point, the first figures are promising. With more than 3,300 units sold in the single month of November 2024, the R5 has simply risen to the top of electric car sales in over a month. Good game, in an electric market which is also down sharply by 25% compared to November 2023. If the total electric sales for 2024 remains in progress, it is therefore only thanks to the social leasing implemented in place in the first quarter, otherwise sales would have fallen in France compared to last year.

A careful launch

Suffice it to say that the electric Renault 5 is experiencing a real boom and is riding on a real novelty effect, also helped by the entire launch plan put in place by Renault, with extended teasing and the introduction of the famous “R5 pass” which allowed those who subscribed to it to have priority in deliveries. By overplaying the exclusivity card, the Losange has amplified the expectation around its star, which does not disappoint once it is delivered to its first customers. These are mainly individuals, even if not all pre-orders have perhaps been honored and certain cars, registered and therefore counted in the figures, are still waiting to be delivered to their buyers.

But this is also undoubtedly the case of the 1,239 new generation Citroën ë-C3s which have already found buyers, which therefore does not detract from the performance of the electric R5 which also competes with the Tesla Model Y. The coming months should confirm this trend, especially since, despite the censorship of the Barnier government in recent weeks, the State wishes to reiterate the social leasing system. The R5 will obviously be one of the big winners from this tax assistance next year, before the boom of the first months dies down… or not.
