The break between the two trading partners began with the declaration of the American president-elect on November 25 on tariffs. Donald Trump has announced that he plans to impose tariffs of 25% on all exports from Canada and Mexico unless they stop the flow of migrants and illegal drugs into the United States.
Several federal and provincial officials in Canada reacted by saying that the problems at the Canadian border were very different from those encountered at the Mexican border.
The Mexican president then declared that Mexico “must be respected, especially by its trading partners,” and that Canada had a much more serious fentanyl consumption problem than in her country.
President Sheinbaum also said that Canada “could only dream of harboring the cultural riches of Mexico,” saying that Mexican civilizations date back thousands of years.
Asked to respond, Minister Joly said she was focused on maintaining a positive relationship with Mexico through private conversations.
