Violence against staff: after 367 events in one year, the Quebec University Hospital launches an awareness campaign

The Interprofessional Union of the CHU de Québec (SICHU) and the CHU de Québec-Université Laval (CHU) want to tackle violence in hospitals with a new awareness campaign, aimed at putting a stop to the violence perpetrated by certain users towards the staff of the organization.

Through this initiative unveiled Wednesday morning, after being officially launched on November 4, the CHU and SICHU wish, among other things, to raise awareness among the population of this reality.

The latter also wish to encourage health workers to denounce acts of violence while 367 events were declared between 1^is April 2023 and March 31, 2024.

However, this would only represent a fraction of the manifestations of violence that actually occur, whether psychological, physical or sexual in nature.

“Violence does not help fight disease,” says Danielle Goulet, president and CEO of the CHU de Québec-Université Laval.

“At the CHU, our commitment to guaranteeing a healthy and safe work and care environment for all is unequivocal. With this campaign, we send a clear message: violence, in all its forms, is unacceptable and must be denounced. Together, we must protect those who care for us,” she adds.

The campaign, which will be deployed over six weeks, is launched as part of the Global Health Forum provided for in the collective agreement, which encourages all staff members as well as the public to find out about the means available to them to report any act of violence.
