STLA Small, Medium, Large and now the top of the basket with the Frame, the latest version of the Stellantis multiplatform. And as its name suggests, it is the only one which will inherit the “beams” chassis when the others are in self-supporting shells. And Stellantis could not do otherwise since the American market is probably the most important today for the group since it is the one which reports the highest profitability rates in the world for Stellantis. And Americans are still in great demand for pick-ups and large SUVs on ladder chassis.. The STLA Frame will fulfill this role and the group is giving us today the first technical details with a few surprises.
A range extender
Stellantis immediately announces a towing capacity of up to 6,350 kg depending on the versions with a payload of 1,224 kg. On these figures, no surprise since we are within the norm of what the current large models from General Motors and Ford offer on medium pick-ups. On the other hand, STLA Frame is still far from the standards of “heavy duty” models which exceed 15 tonnes of towing capacity. A figure that we find for example on the very latest Ram HD in V8 gasoline or six-cylinder in-line diesel.
Just like the European models which are multi-energy, the STLA Frame platform will be able to offer different scenarios depending on customer expectations and the markets. Obviously sold all-electric (up to 800 km of autonomy on the largest batteries), Frame will also be entitled to hybrid, hydrogen and thermal variants “in the future”, tells us Stellantis. And above all, a little surprise, a new electric version with a range extender with, as a result, 1100 km of autonomy. A version which should please those for whom all-electric is unthinkable for intensive offroad and rural use.
Stellantis electric motors
The group provides some details on the electric variants whose engines will be designed in-house. They will deliver up to 340 hp per unit and will be associated with batteries whose capacities will range from 159 to “more than 200 kWh”with the possibility of bidirectional charging. Quite unreasonable figures for us Europeans, and which bring back the question of the scarcity of raw materials to produce these energy storage units while China controls the entire metal production chain. Finally, Stellantis specifies that only the 100% electric versions will be wired at 800V with charging powers of up to 320 kW. The range extender variants will be 400V and will not exceed 175 kW.
