Recently invited to participate in a podcast, Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, gave his point of view on the evolution of artificial intelligence and the potential of this technology for the coming years. He is quick to predict that everyone will use it in the future.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping the world of work, that’s a fact. Opinions are divided on this: some believe that it is inevitable and that humanity will have to get used to it. Others believe that AI will allow workers in many sectors to free themselves from the most alienating tasks, which sounds like a good thing.
For Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft turned philanthropist, artificial intelligence will radically change task execution in the future. He says this isn’t going to be limited to office jobs, as AI will be integrated into robots within the decade, allowing them to run hotels or carry out dangerous tasks on construction sites. But that’s not all: AI would also have a place in people’s personal lives.
A revolution like the personal computer
To illustrate his words, Bill Gates uses computers as an example. First present in businesses, they gradually made their way into the homes of millions of people and became more popular by becoming more affordable. For the billionaire, the current evolution of artificial intelligence follows the same logic : “You know, we will all have an agent who will be a utilitarian aid to accomplishing tasks… your agent will be able to determine which parts of this will be important enough to be worth your time to understand”summarizes Bill Gates.
An opinion which ultimately agrees with that of many observers – very often extremely wealthy – who consider that the main interest of AI is to prevent humans from wasting time on what is not worth iteven if it means making millions of jobs obsolete. Remember that in October, Bill Gates estimated that only three professional environments should escape the onslaught of AI : energy, biology and the development of AI systems.
A prospect that worries many employees
Some people will say that it is easy to predict that AI will make people’s lives easier when you are a billionaire. In fact, studies show that 37% of companies have already replaced employees with AI, and 44% anticipate AI-related layoffs in 2024. For his part, billionaire Vinod Khosla, a very active investor in Silicon Valley, believes that AI will replace most human jobs over the next 25 years. He considers that AI could do 80% of all jobsincluding those of general practitioners, salespeople and engineers, more efficiently than humans. A prophecy with a slight taste of the end of the world all the same…
