The BMW M5 plug-in hybrid is a real fighter plane for families, which takes care of its respect for the environment

Muscle and agility

By becoming a hybrid, the M5 combines a 585 horsepower 4.4l V8 engine with a 197 hp electric motor capable of operating alone for 69 km, powered by its 18.6 kWh battery. Enough to bring the official consumption down to… 2l/100km! And when the two engines work together, they deliver 727 horsepower! The performance is then insane, going from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. But above all, when the cavalry comes rolling in, it really puts a smile on your face! We have the impression that the V8 never wants to stop climbing the revs! And with the electric boost, as soon as you put the throttle back on, the speeds become crazy, and in the blink of an eye.

To control the 2,435 kg, the chassis engineers have been working hard. They notably added rear steering wheels, in a fairly discreet manner however since they only turn at an angle of 1.5° maximum. A trick that helps to reduce the feeling of weight when driving. Body movements are almost absent and the car is surprisingly rigid, while being remarkably comfortable thanks to the excellent seats.

Verdict

In summary, this M5 is much more aggressive than the previous generation, at all levels.

But the brakes have a lot to do to stop the 2,435 kg (+40 kg on the station wagon). In terms of behavior, this is really the only fault of this M5. And perhaps its (too) great complexity of settings and operating modes via the main screen: 5 modes linked to the operation of the hybrid system, 3 driving modes strictly speaking, and individual settings for each parameter. You almost have to be an engineer to understand everything! As for the price, you can imagine that it is not within everyone’s reach: From €144,150 and €147,150 for the station wagon.
