Umicore cuts up to 100 jobs in Belgium, Renault procedure initiated

Umicore announced on Wednesday that it would let go of 260 workers, including around a hundred in Belgium. The information and consultation phase of the Renault procedure has begun. The construction of its Canadian battery materials factory also remains suspended, the materials technology group announced on Wednesday.

Umicore will, as indicated during the presentation of its mid-year results, cut 260 jobs in a bid to reduce costs. In Belgium, around a hundred jobs are affected, mainly jobs in R&D in Olen and certain corporate functions in Brussels.

Elsewhere in the world, job losses are expected in China at the Jiangmen production plant and in Horsholm in Denmark, as R&D activities for heavy-duty diesel applications located there will be transferred to Hanau, Denmark. Germany. Construction of the Canadian factory is suspended.

The savings measures announced this Wednesday are in addition to an efficiency program launched in 2023 and should generate around 40 million euros in annualized savings from 2025, indicates Umicore.

The group currently employs around 12,000 people worldwide, including 3,500 in Belgium.
