Firefighters from the city of Lausanne during a march on Tuesday.Keystone
Lausanne firefighters are unhappy with their working conditions and are making it known through a historic demonstration in the streets of the city on Tuesday.
Anger is brewing among the professional firefighters of the City of Lausanne. For the first time in the history of the barracks, more than sixty of them marched at the end of the day on Tuesday to the Municipal Council to demand an improvement in their working conditions and to make themselves heard by the Municipality.
“Professionals deplore in particular that the measures planned to respond to the arduousness of the profession, which were to accompany the increase in their retirement age, have still not been implemented. They demand that these provisions, appearing in a notice passed ten years ago, are finally applied, and unconditionally”

Another worrying and surprising point is that 12.5 positions available to the service are not occupied. Result, just-in-time planning and employees frequently reminded of their days off.
- A project of unknown time rules which should be put into force on January 1, 2025, also annoys professional firefighters who are calling for a one-year postponement;
- They also fight for an increase in their night allowance (2.80 francs per hour) much lower than those of the police and ambulance forces.
The firefighters, who want more recognition and consideration given the importance of their mission to the population, delivered a letter to the members of the Municipal Council. They ask them to support the urgent inquiry filed by municipal councilor Pierre Conscience (Together on the left) who relays their grievances. (sda/ats)
