Why does Friday the 13th cause so much fear?

N’Don’t dare plan anything on Friday the 13th. A crucial job interview or a crucial meeting could well turn into a disaster. Why is that? Friday the 13th is feared more than a black cat crossing your path. This irrational fear has a name as fearsome as the phenomenon itself: “paraskevidekatriaphobia,” or Friday the 13th phobia. But where does this collective anxiety come from, and why is this specific day perceived as a dire omen?

The number 13 has long been a symbol of bad luck in many cultural traditions. One of the most commonly cited origins of this superstition can be traced back to the Bible, specifically to the Last Supper, the final meal shared by Jesus Christ with his twelve apostles. Judas, the one who would betray Jesus, arrived last, becoming the thirteenth guest. This association of 13 with the betrayal and death of Jesus has cemented the idea that this number brings bad luck.

In Norse mythology, another legend links the 13th to a tragic event. At a banquet held in Valhalla, twelve gods were invited. But Loki, the god of deception and chaos, invited himself uninvited, becoming the thirteenth guest.
