Algeria strengthens its dairy processing capacities

(Agence Ecofin) – In Algeria, the consumption of milk and derived products is the highest in Africa. In the country, the government, which wishes to reduce its dependence on imports, encourages investments in local industry.

In Algeria, the dairy industry plans to increase its production capacity by nearly 1,300 tonnes by the end of the first quarter of 2025 thanks to 3 industrial projects. This was revealed by Youcef Cherfa (photo), Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who spoke to local media on Thursday October 24.

According to the official, a private dairy with a production capacity of 11.2 tonnes of milk per day is planned to begin operations on November 1 in the wilaya of Bordj Badji Mokhtar while a public dairy capable of supplying 250 tonnes per day of milk will also be launched on November 17 in the Wilaya of Bouira.

Furthermore, the 3th larger-scale project will be implemented by the Industrial Group for the Production of Milk and Its Derivatives (Giplait) and concerns in particular the installation of a production unit with a capacity of 1000 tonnes per day of pasteurized milk and UHT (Ultra High Temperature) milk based in Rouiba in Algiers. According to Mr. Cherfa, this latest installation will be operational from February 2025.

Overall, these investments should help improve local supplies and at the same time help reduce the country’s dependence on milk imports. According to FAO data, Algeria imported almost half of its consumption of dairy products, estimated on average at nearly 6.5 million tonnes per year between 2020 and 2022.
