According to an investigation published Thursday, October 17, many well-known products from the United States are sold illegally in . In question, their content of additives considered dangerous for health.

Products harmful to health. An investigation carried out jointly by the Marianne and France Inter media shows that food products from the United States, banned within the European Union, are still imported and sold illegally in France in grocery stores, supermarkets and even on online stores.

These products are numerous and include M&M’s with “peanut butter flavor”, Heinz tomato sauce with pickle or even Fanta with “strawberry flavor”.

Titanium dioxide, a very dangerous product

Within the survey, we can find a list of these additives and those which come up most often are titanium dioxide (E171), aluminum sulfate (E520), erythrosine (E127), but also other industrial dyes or overdosed benzoic acids.

A product like titanium dioxide is considered extremely dangerous for health. It caused “the appearance of precancerous lesions in the colon in animals after 100 days of exposure,” analyzes Eric Houdeau, researcher at the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment . “These titanium dioxide nanoparticles are being studied closely by the scientific community,” the scientist had already declared in 2023.

“Studies on this additive have shown that it has the potential to damage DNA. For substances of this type, we cannot issue an acceptable safety threshold,” explained the director of the food additives unit of the European Food Safety Agency to Marianne.

To deal with the influx of this type of product, the authorities have implemented more frequent customs checks, and according to France Inter, more than 72 tonnes of goods have already been seized. Consequently, products no longer pass through the ports of and , they now pass through the port of Rotterdam.
