Bargain hunting at the heart of holiday shopping

Canadians do not intend to deprive themselves of spoiling their loved ones with gifts for the end of year holidays, but they are still on the lookout for deals to be able to get the best deals, according to a survey by the Canadian Trade Council of detail (CCCD).

Canadians are expected to spend an average of $972 on holiday treats, which represents a budget increase of $74 compared to last year.

A large majority of them (90%), however, rely on good management of their budget and will actively look for good deals.

Nearly 71% of Canadians surveyed also decided to change their habits by “buying fewer gifts and focusing on the best deals.”

“Consumers are determined to celebrate the holidays, but they are shopping smarter than ever,” Diane J. Brisebois, president and CEO of the CCCD, said Friday.

Not surprisingly, many consumers therefore rely on Black Friday for their purchases, while 48% of respondents consider it to be the most important shopping day.

In order to hunt for the best deals, 38% of respondents also said they delay their purchases until the biggest sales. Others (12%) search for Christmas gifts throughout the year.

In general, spending focuses on clothing as well as the food and alcohol that will be served during the holidays, with each of these items taking up 16% of the budget. Many consumers (42%) also rely on gift cards to offer.

The Léger survey was conducted among 2,510 Canadians over the age of 18 with the last wave of data collection being carried out from September 23 to October 1, 2024.
