drop in oil production after 5 consecutive quarters of increase

(Ecofin Agency) – Gabon’s oil production on 1is half-year 2024, however, remains up year-on-year, by 8.9%. It increased from 38.5 million barrels to 41.8 million, thanks to the good performance of mature fields and the rise of new wells.

Gabonese oil production fell by 10.8% in 2th quarter 2024. The country produced 19.9 million barrels over the period, compared to 21.8 million barrels in the previous quarter. This is the 1era decline in figures for 5 consecutive quarters of increase, mentions New Gabon.

According to the Ministry of the Economy, it “was influenced by operational incidents causing the poor direction of production of 5 operators (Perenco, Assala, Vaalco, BWE, Addax Petroleum). Thus, the incident on the Becuna site, the problems encountered by BWE, very strongly contributed to the drop in oil production.”

Several incidents have recently affected the sector in Gabon, such as the fire on the Becuna platform operated by the Franco-British Perenco. The British BW Energy (BWE) for its part experienced some operating difficulties with the submersible electric pumps on its DHIBM-3H and -4H wells in the Hibiscus/Ruche marine field, Dussafu license.

Also observed at the level of crude exports, the decline generally affected extractive activities, whose production index fell by 7.7% over the period under review. The outlook from the Economic Dashboard, however, remains current, with a forecast of 11,678 million tonnes of oil in 2024, more than the 11,160 million tonnes produced in 2023.
