“A marriage of convenience”: the Minister of Finance in Greece, when the country was on the verge of bankruptcy, destroys the application of the NFP program

the essential
Yanis Varoufakis is a former finance minister in Greece. Questioned in Libération about the debt situation in , he is annoyed that the NFP has not been perfectly honest about the application of its program.

It will have escaped no one’s notice that the NFP is not in power. But, if he had succeeded, to be able to implement his program, he would have had to enter into “a major clash with the European Union”. In any case, this is what Yanis Varoufakis, Minister of Finance of Greece in 2015 during the country’s economic recovery period, puts forward in an interview with Libération.

For him, the left would then have found itself “in the same situation as in Greece in 2015, confronting the European Central Bank, the European Commission, and even the IMF”. And although this does not mean that he disagrees with this program, he believes that it involves two major problems for the left. First of all, he criticizes “the fact that the NFP did not tell the French, neither before the election nor after” that the program it proposed involved a conflict of this kind with European authorities.

Then, if he has no doubt that “Mélenchon will clash with the EU”, he considers that this is not part of the “DNA” of the Greens or the socialists. He therefore questions the effective application that this program would have had.

The NFP, a “marriage of convenience”?

“What are they doing signing a common program that requires a conflict that they are not prepared to have?” he asks of the two social democratic parties. A question which did not fail to be taken up on social networks, in particular to criticize the PS or the Greens for their commitment within the NFP.

Hello Olivier Faure, hello Marine Tondelier, this morning in Libé you have hello from Yanis Varoufakis, economist, former Greek Minister of the Economy, figure of the radical left. He tells you his truth, about your lies… pic.twitter.com/HM9cxhzA7u

It must be said that by speaking of the NFP as a “marriage of convenience without the degree of honesty that people on the left and progressives should adopt”, Yanis Varoufakis takes up an argument which has often been opposed to the alliance of left by his political adversaries. Others rather question the legitimacy of the words of this ephemeral Minister of Finance of a foreign country.

Varoufakis has the merit of saying out loud what the NFP program on the EU implies, but the audience of this character, 5 months Minister of Finance, repeatedly disavowed by the Greeks in the elections who proposes to make Uber and Airbnb municipal services in is fascinating https://t.co/5gOgnPPWJY

However, we cannot doubt his preference for the left since he describes himself as a “libertarian Marxist”.

In addition to this charge on the electoral strategy of the French left, Yanis Varoufakis also addresses his perspectives and draws up a very critical observation against the president. “Emmanuel Macron will make history by leaving the door open to fascism” and “contribute to maximizing the chances of Marine le Pen”, he declares in particular. Finally, he recalls that according to him, “it is scandalous that the New Popular Front was not authorized to form a government”.
