Parisians, managers, high-level athletes… Who are the 65,000 wealthiest households in Michel Barnier’s sights?

DECRYPTAGE – These rich households will have to make an effort to participate in the recovery of public accounts. Who are they? Le Figaro paints a sketch of these very high incomes.

“Tax the rich”. The formula had flourished in the demonstrations against the pension reform in 2023. Since the arrival of Michel Barnier at Matignon, the refrain has become more and more recurrent. And, faced with the scale of the public deficit, the Prime Minister decided: the State will request an additional tax effort, “targeted, time-limited and shared”to certain actors. This will affect large companies as well as “The most fortunate French people”targeted by an “exceptional contribution”, confirmed the head of government during his general policy speech.

“We are really talking about the most fortunate”assured Laurent Saint-Martin, the new Minister of Budget and Public Accounts, either «0,3%» of the approximately 20 million households paying income tax. The former treasurer of Emmanuel Macron’s campaign notably cited the example of“a household without children which earns approximately 500,000 euros per year”. Still according to the ministry, 65,000 tax households will be affected by this measure, the outlines of which will be revealed as part of the finance bill, presented in the coming days. But who really are these wealthiest households in ?
