Gübelin gets a slice of watchmaking heritage

Published on October 4, 2024 at 4:27 p.m. / Modified on October 4, 2024 at 5:38 p.m.

Lucerne retailer Gübelin chose St. Gallen to present its latest watch on Thursday evening. It had been around twenty years since the family house had produced one. But there was an anniversary to celebrate: the brand blew out its 170 candles. A good excuse to recall that Gübelin was born in watchmaking, before extending its activity to jewelry, then to gemmological expertise, with the opening of a laboratory dedicated to certification.

The choice of St. Gallen was also deliberate. The heart of the old town is home to a spectacular underground architectural work, the Pfalzkeller. An art building by star architect Santiago Calatrava, a Spaniard who has lived in Switzerland for a long time and a long-time friend of the Gübelin family. It was he who designed the watch, produced, as it should be, in 170 copies.
