Bruno Le Maire hands over the keys to Bercy and a Basque makila to Antoine Armand

HASAfter seven years at Bercy, Bruno Le Maire is giving way to Antoine Armand, the new Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry, on Sunday 22 September, the day after the announcement of Michel Barnier’s government. The transfer of power was an opportunity for him to look back on his record at the “Ministry of Possibilities”, mentioning, in particular, the drop in unemployment, factory openings and the strong attractiveness of in Europe.

Furthermore, in his assessment, “there is no tax increase, because I have refused, for seven years, this easy solution”, tackles Bruno Le Maire, while his successor does not automatically exclude “certain exceptional and targeted levies”. His action is however tarnished by the slippage of public finances: “There is a lot of power within these walls, but no magic power. There is no miracle recipe to restore our public accounts”, he warns.

Finally, before definitively handing over the keys to his successor, Bruno La Maire offered the MP a makila, both a walking stick and a traditional Basque defence weapon, to “help him cross the passes and face the many dangers he will encounter on his way”.
