Falcon and Hensen join forces for anode plant

Jointly developing an anode plant in Morocco is the vision of the Canadian group Falcon Energy Materials and the Chinese Hensen Graphite & Carbon Cooperate, who recently signed an agreement for the construction of a production unit specializing in the manufacture of coated spherical purified graphite, also known as CSPG.

The collaboration will allow the two companies to develop a “process flowsheet to produce CSPG that meets all end-user quality requirements while promoting industry-leading transparency and sustainability standards,” Falcon Energy said in a statement.

In addition, Falcon Energy is working with Tanger Med Engineering and other stakeholders to develop a preliminary economic assessment of this project. This study aims to demonstrate the financial viability of the plant and pave the way for discussions with financial partners and local authorities. The publication of this assessment is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024.

This partnership is part of a broader strategy by Morocco, which seeks to position itself as a leader in battery production, thus attracting many international companies. Rachid Yazami, a prominent Moroccan scientist, had already highlighted the country’s potential in this field, stressing the key role of scientific research and the training of Moroccan engineers.

These initiatives are multiplying: the Chinese group BTR recently announced the construction of a factory in Tangier, with an investment of 366 million dollars, while Gotion High-Tech, another Chinese company, signed an agreement for the creation of a gigafactory in Kenitra, thus strengthening Morocco’s role in the global battery production chain.

Morocco now appears set to become a key player in the global battery industry, with major projects that promise to transform its economy and industrial landscape.
