A man hospitalized and a dozen horses dead in Hérault

VIRUS – These numerous mosquito contaminations confirm the virulence of the West Nile virus near Montpellier, close to the Petite Camargue

A resident of Baillargues, near Montpellier, was hospitalized after contracting human infection with the West Nile virus. “The health of this person is now stable,” said the Hérault prefecture. “In most cases, human infection with the West Nile virus is asymptomatic, meaning that the patient does not present any symptoms,” the prefecture emphasizes. “In some cases, the disease manifests itself as a flu-like syndrome, sometimes accompanied by a rash.”

The virus is circulating very actively

The virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, is circulating very actively near the Petite Camargue, around the towns of Mauguio, Lattes and Lansargues in particular. The final results of the analyses on three horses confirmed the presence of the virus. The contamination of four other equines is strongly suspected. Analyses are also underway on their corpses. “My horse died after three hours,” Ludovic Gely, president of the Pôle équestre de l’Or in Mauguio, explained to BMFTV. In total, around ten horses have been victims of the virus in recent days.
