In Paris, Macron’s “coup de force” is not going down well

LThe environmentalist, communist and Insoumis leaders needed a demonstration to claim a monopoly on opposition to Emmanuel Macron, after the RN decided to give the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier a chance for the time being. This is why Jean-Luc Mélenchon called, in a video posted on social media, for “the most powerful mobilization possible” against Emmanuel Macron’s “coup de force” after his refusal to nominate the candidate of the Union of the Left, Lucie Castets. And this Saturday, September 7, a dense crowd, dotted with Palestinian flags, took to the streets of Paris between Bastille and Nation, under intermittent rain.

This was just one of some 140 demonstrations that took place throughout France, scheduled since August by several student organizations. It should be remembered that the leaders of the Socialist Party had not called for people to join the movement, leaving everyone free to choose.

It was under the chants of “Macron, resign” by the demonstrators that a fired-up Jean-Luc Mélenchon took the floor, perched on the back of a tank on which fluttered a large banner displaying “For democracy, stop Macron’s coup de force”. “How strange, throughout history, is the conceit of monarchs,” the leader of the Insoumis began to discourse.
