“Thank you dear Gabriel Attal for these eight months as Prime Minister,” wrote Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, September 5. In a publication posted on social networks, the head of state thanked the man who will leave the Hôtel de Matignon today.

More than a month and a half after accepting the resignation of the Attal government, Emmanuel Macron has named his successor: Michel Barnier, a former minister and right-wing European commissioner.

“With the Government, you have moved the country forward and contributed to its influence at an important time,” the president wrote to Gabriel Attal, adding:

“Serving our fellow citizens, with France at heart.”

President of the Renaissance group in the Assembly

Michel Barnier becomes, at 73 years old, the oldest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic upon his appointment, after Gabriel Attal who, at 34, became the youngest tenant of Matignon.

Gabriel Attal will therefore put away his Prime Minister’s costume to take on that of leader of the Ensemble pour la République group (ex-Renaissance) in the National Assembly. Re-elected as deputy for the 10th constituency of Hauts-de-Seine during the legislative elections, he will once again sit on the benches of the hemicyle.

In a video published this Thursday, Gabriel Attal said that being Prime Minister was “the honor of (his) life”. Before adding: “I will always do everything to live up to our country that we love so much. Thank you to all the French people I met who allowed me to listen to them”. He promised to “continue” to “weave” the “bond” that unites him to the French.
