Football: Nagelsmann coach of Germany until 2028

Julian Nagelsmann has extended his lease as Germany coach until Euro 2028, setting himself the goal of putting the Mannschaft back at the top of the bill and finally bringing back trophies after the recovery started in 2024.

It was on the occasion of the celebration in Leipzig of the 125th anniversary of its creation that the German Federation (DFB) surprised Friday by announcing in a press release the extension until the summer of 2028 of its coach of 37 years, whose initial contract had been extended for the first time in the spring of 2024 by two years until 2026.

“Julian Nagelsmann fulfills this function perfectly thanks to his sporting expertise, but also his sensitivity for the Mannschaft and the supporters,” explains the president of the DFB, Bernd Neuendorf, quoted in the press release from the body.

Former coach of Bayern Munich from July 2021 to March 2023, Julian Nagelsmann arrived at the end of September 2023 at the bedside of a German selection mired in one of the deepest crises in its history.

After a glorious decade 2006/2016 – five consecutive appearances in the last four of a major tournament – marked by the world title in Brazil in 2014, Germany declined with three premature eliminations at the 2018 World Cup (1st round), Euro 2021 (round of 16), and the 2022 World Cup (1st round).

He replaced Hansi Flick, the first coach in the history of the Mannschaft who was dismissed by the Federation during his mandate, after a series of catastrophic results.

At the start of 2024, Nagelsmann imposed his strong choices to rebuild a team which reached the quarter-finals of “his” Euro 2024 at home, eliminated in overtime (2-1) by Spain, future winner of the competition.
