I published a post on Wednesday on Elon Musk’s criticisms of the “Stargate” project, announced with great fanfare the day before at the White House by Donald Trump, in the presence of its main donors, namely OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank. The leaders of these companies have promised to participate in investments of “at least $500 billion” over four years (according to Trump) to position the United States as the undisputed leader in artificial intelligence.
On his platform, Musk was quick to question the feasibility of this project, with an initial investment of $100 billion, saying that OpenAi “didn’t really have the money” and that SoftBank “ had guaranteed much less than $10 billion.” He added by repeating a “joke” according to which OpenAI boss Sam Altman and his partners had smoked crack “to arrive at their figure of $500 billion for Stargate”.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, Trump allies told the Politico news site that Musk’s criticism of one of the president’s first major initiatives had deeply displeased his closest advisers. One said Trump’s entourage was “furious.” “It’s clear he abused his proximity to the president,” a Trump ally said. “The problem is that the president has no leverage over him and Elon doesn’t give a damn. »
Publicly, Trump responded philosophically to Musk’s criticism of a project he called “tremendous” and “monumental.” He blamed them on the well-known disagreement between Musk and Altman, who now runs two rival artificial intelligence companies after co-founding OpenAI.
But the episode raises the question of how much longer Trump and his entourage will tolerate Musk. During the last broadcast of the podcast Stay TunedKara Swisher, a leading specialist in Big Tech, described receiving calls from members of Trump’s entourage. “They tell me: ‘Musk is crazy! He’s a power grabber!” I tell them, “I told you so.” They ask me: “What should we do?” I tell them: “Good luck”. And I hang up. »
