The French president announced “that in 2025, we must be able to pay at tolls with our phone”. Emmanuel Macron was responding to an influencer who was fined for paying at the toll using his phone.
The ban on paying motorway tolls with your phone is soon to be over, Emmanuel Macron announced this Wednesday, January 22 on Tiktok. The President of the Republic was responding to two influencers who have taken up this subject in recent days.
One of them, “s4iint”, said last week that he “ate 90 euros fine and three points on the license because I paid with my phone in Apple Pay at the toll” due to “the using the phone while driving.
The TikToker says at the end of the video that he then noticed that the police simply applied the law. “I swore, it's true. You're not allowed to pay with Apple Pay with your phone, because that's 'use of the phone while driving'”, he says in a video that counts today now almost five million views.
“We will collectively resolve this”
Masdak, an influencer followed by three million people on Tiktok and specializing in tips for dealing with scams, covered this story in a video. He explains that “at the toll, you are on a motorway lane, your vehicle is still considered roadworthy, a fixed fine of 135 euros and a withdrawal of three points from your driving license”.
-On Tiktok, Emmanuel Macron responded to the two influencers and estimated “that in 2025, we must be able to pay at the toll with our phone”. “So I passed the file to the Minister of the Interior and we will collectively resolve this,” continues the president.
In his article R1412-6-1, the Highway Code clearly explains that “the use of a telephone held in the hand by the driver of a vehicle in circulation is prohibited”.
If passing through the toll requires a driver to stop his vehicle, this stop is only temporary, since once he has paid for his passage, he must be able to leave the scene quickly to let others carry out the same action. An obligation which is not compatible with a telephone in hand, according to the law.
