Contrary to some popular belief, electric cars are not really in more difficulty than their thermal counterparts in winter. Cold weather nevertheless remains an element to face for all vehicles, whether electric or not. The range of electric models decreases while fuel consumption increases for gasoline or diesel cars during periods of cold weather.
A world leader in electric vehicle adoption, Norway is also known for its harsh winters and Norwegians closely monitor the performance of electric vehicles during this period. It must be said that 9 out of 10 new cars sold in the country are electric, according to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV). As every year for the past six years, the automobile magazine Motor in collaboration with the Norwegian Automobile Federation (NAF) is organizing a test called “El Prix”. Considered the largest range test of electric vehicles in the world, it is entitled to a winter edition and the results have just been published.
The Polestar 3 leads the way, along with other Chinese cars
Among the 24 brand new vehicles tested, the Polestar 3 turned out to be the champion in cold weather with 531 km traveled while the manufacturer’s data shows 560 km. The difference measured with the cycle is only 5% and allows the car to post the second best result ever recorded by Motor journalists during the six editions of the winter test. The best performance was achieved with the BMW iX3 in 2021 (-4%).
The performance is notable and allows the Polestar 3 to appear just ahead of the BYD Tang. The latter covered a little more than 480 km (482 km) out of the 530 km announced, a difference of 9%. The electric Mini Countryman completes the podium with 355 km and a loss of 11% compared to the WLTP range promise of 399 km.
Tesla is not at its best and Peugeot is last
In this ranking, you have to look down to find any trace of the electric vehicle giant Tesla. The American manufacturer is however present with the Tesla Model 3 Large Autonomy Propulsion and even displays the most impressive WLTP autonomy on paper with 702 km. The electric sedan, however, is struggling and is only in twenty-first position (out of 24), with 531 km traveled. If it ultimately does as well as the Polestar 3 in terms of kilometers traveled, the Tesla Model 3 is far from its manufacturer’s promise (-24% autonomy).
-Finally, the two French cars participating in the test do not shine and are among the worst performers. The Peugeot E-5008 and E-3008 rank twenty-second and twenty-fourth respectively. Here is the complete ranking of the 24 models:
