A woman from Quebec who loves cats has started creating small shelters for homeless felines so that they can take refuge there during the severe cold, like the one that has been raging since Monday.
“4 paws warm – Project Pixel” is an initiative by Caroline Morasse. It was his cat Pixel, who until recently was on the street, who gave him the idea of creating these little shelters, made with coolers, Styrofoam, plastic bins and wool blankets.
The project was launched last fall. The volunteer appealed to everyone to obtain the necessary materials to make the shelters. So far, she has made more than twenty of them and around fifteen others are in preparation.
Around twenty shelters like these were distributed mainly in the Limoilou sector. Photo provided by Caroline Morasse Posted on January 21, 2025

“The first three weeks, I spent nearly 50 hours, every evening after work, collecting donations from the public,” she says. I didn’t expect such enthusiasm.”
Several of these shelters were delivered and installed free of charge in the Limoilou area, a neighborhood well known for having many stray cats.
Looking for donations
“With the donations, it allowed me to offer the first 22 shelters for free. The next ones, as I have to buy the equipment, I will have to sell them,” she explains.
However, it still accepts donations of supplies and money, which could allow them to be sold at little or no cost.
-She searches for straw, wool blankets, coolers and Styrofoam. If all goes well, she would also like to improve the comfort of these shelters, by making them out of wood and adding, if possible, a small heating light.
“For next winter, I would perhaps like to find a hardware store or people who could help me get prices [pour le matériel] more affordable,” adds Mme Morasse.
She already plans to learn how to make wooden shelters herself next summer, with the help of a carpenter.
For those who would like to have one of these shelters, it should be taken into consideration that there will be a certain delay before the cat enters to take shelter there. There are two doors per shelter, so that the cat feels comfortable escaping through one of them, in the presence of a predator. To motivate the cat to go there, food or catnip can be placed there.
