Entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy is leaving his post as co-director of the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) to run for governor of Ohio. This unexpected departure leaves Elon Musk as sole leader of this controversial new federal organization, created by presidential decree.
Elon Musk remains alone at the head of DOGE
On January 20, Vivek Ramaswamy officially announced on social network X his withdrawal from DOGE, a structure he helped establish alongside Elon Musk.
This announcement comes as several American media, including CBS News and the New York Times, report his probable candidacy for the post of governor of Ohio, a state whose mandate of current governor Mike DeWine will end in January 2027.
DOGE spokesperson Anna Kelly confirmed to The Associated Press that the departure was linked to Ramaswamy's future political ambitions, as the department's structure requires strict separation from any electoral activity.
According to information reported by Politico, Elon Musk himself pushed for this separation, after the emergence of growing disagreements between the two leaders.
Ramaswamy's departure comes in a particularly delicate context for DOGE. It is already the subject of legal action by several organizations, including Public Citizen, challenging its legality under the Federal Advisory Committee Act.
A department under fire from criticism
Ramaswamy's departure comes at a critical time for DOGE, which already faces significant legal obstacles. The organization, whose name refers to Elon Musk's favorite crypto Dogecoin, is currently being targeted by lawsuits from Public Citizen and other nonprofits.
-These lawsuits, filed as soon as Trump took office, challenge the legality of DOGE under the Federal Advisory Committee Act.
The initiative, which aims to radically reduce federal spending through budget cuts and job cuts, now finds itself under the exclusive leadership of Elon Musk.
This new configuration raises questions about the organization's ability to achieve its ambitious government streamlining goals, even as legal challenges mount.
In short, this sudden departure of Ramaswamy leaves many questions surrounding the future and effectiveness of DOGE. Elon Musk finds himself alone at the helm of an already contested organization, while his former partner turns to new political ambitions in Ohio.
