Power outages: many Montrealers woke up in the dark

Many Quebec homes were plunged into darkness Tuesday morning due to outages on the Hydro-Quebec electricity network, while extreme cold raged in the province.

At the height of the outage, more than 70,000 people were without electricity, around 6 a.m., the vast majority of whom were in Montreal.

A transformer breakdown at Hydro-Québec’s Charland substation, in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, subsequently occurred late in the morning, depriving approximately 15,000 customers of power.

Around 12:30 p.m., the situation was almost completely back under control.

In addition to Montreal, the Outaouais and Montérégie regions also suffered during the morning.

Some power outages were also recorded in other regions, notably in the Laurentians, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Centre-du-Québec, and Lanaudière.
