Franck Dubosc: “I won’t stop without being back on stage”

16 days before the release of Un ours dans le Jura, your third production, are you a happy filmmaker?

Franck Dubosc. Very happy. The bear is doing very well: we are approaching 800,000 entries!

You told me that you made this film for yourself, being a little selfish to use your expression: morality, you have to please yourself to please others!

Yes, I had fun saying it, obviously hoping that my selfishness, in quotes, would please the public. By having fun, obviously, I was demanding, and it is perhaps precisely this requirement that makes a good film that has been very well received.

The most beautifulu compliment in my eyes are those who say…

You are unanimous!

There is never unanimity. It’s a little unanimity that suits me very well.

What feedback made you most happy?

People are happy, they have the same satisfaction as me from exploring and daring new things while remaining myself. The best compliment in my eyes are those who say “I never thought I would say good things about a Franck Dubosc film”. What I don’t take at all badly, I can understand, because me too! What I like is the curiosity that these people had. I tell myself that cinema spectators are really good spectators, in the sense that they like to discover: they gave me a chance!

So you’ve expanded your fan base even further!

I won over my fans and gained new ones, you couldn’t ask for better. It’s without calculation, since the first one I wanted to please was myself. I think that if I had been in the calculations, I would have missed my shot! I went all in, telling myself, whoever loves me follows me. I have to think the same thing for the next film.

The return of Franck Dubosc on stage?

We are at the Alpe d’Huez Comedy Festival, of which you were president of the jury in 2018, what are your bedside comedies?

Apart from those of Splendid which are unanimous, my favorite films are romantic comedies. I adore Mary at all costsby the Farelly brothers, which, in its own way, is quite romantic! I really like the ZAZ parody comedies, Zucher-Abraham-Zucher: the collection of Is there a driver in theplane, Top Secret… These comedies, perhaps a little dated, deserve to be rediscovered.

Yesterday, you went on stage before an official screening, and it was eye-popping, you love the contact with the audience which makes you feel good! For me, it’s obvious that you will return there, even if you recently told me that it was very time-consuming and therefore complicated…

This obviously tickles me. I don’t think I’ll stop until I get back on stage with one last show.
