Consumption and emissions doubled

To better match the supposed reality, a new approval standard came into force on January 1st. Called Euro 6e-bis, it requires that the values be recorded over a distance of 2,200 km, instead of 800 km previously. This obviously completely changes the situation with consumption and CO2 emissions which can sometimes double compared to the initial value. The stated desire is to make this type of engine less attractive to the public in order to push them towards fully electric cars. This will be even more the case from 2027, when this new standard will be further reinforced with tests carried out over a distance of 4,260 km!

A real problem for manufacturers

This new measure looks very much like collective punishment because of a few bad students. Indeed, due to the very use to which the dual engine is put, it is truly the behavior of the user which determines consumption, more than for any other type of engine. But above all, this new calculation of approval standards could become a real headache for manufacturers, already caught in the throat by the CAFE standards. These increased values will make them even more complicated to achieve in order to avoid at all costs the colossal fines provided for in the event of non-compliance.

A way for Europe to push a little further towards electric cars, ignoring current market realities.
