A plane from Bangkok carrying 181 people crashed at Muan airport in southwestern South Korea on Sunday, firefighters said. The accident left at least 29 dead, said the head of the intervention team.
“But the toll could rise due to the number of serious injuries,” she added. Several passengers were extracted alive by firefighters from the rear of the aircraft.
The plane, which was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, crashed while landing in Muan, a city 290 kilometers south of the capital Seoul. The crash appears to have been caused by ‘contact with birds, leading to a malfunction of the landing gear,’ South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.
According to the specialist site Flightradar, the aircraft is a Boeing 737-8AS from the South Korean low-cost airline Jeju Air, which entered service in August 2009.
Images broadcast by South Korean television channels on Sunday morning showed numerous emergency service vehicles and dozens of firefighters working around the completely charred wreckage of the plane.
