the Chinese electric car designed to hurt the Renault 5

The manufacturer Nio has no shortage of ideas for tackling Europe. If we have known its premium models for a long time (ET5, ET7 or EL6 and EL7), we are less familiar with the manufacturer's sister brands, all grouped under the same banner. Thus, the Nio brand also counts Onvo and, for just a few hours, Firefly in its ranks. It is the latter that interests us today for the simple reason that it is designed to make noise on the European market.

Indeed, if Nio wishes to embody the high end, Onvo and Firefly were designed for lower price segments. Onvo already has a vehicle on the market, the L60, positioned at the heart of the range on its national market. Firefly's objective is different: it is to offer an inexpensive electric car, capable of establishing itself on the European market.

Thus, Firefly, whose first model will be marketed in China in April 2025, should not wait long before testing the asphalt of the Old Continent. In any case, this is the will of its manufacturer who has already announced the price of the vehicle: a little less than 150,000 yuan or less than 19,500 euros.

If adaptation to the European market should increase it by a few thousand euros, the first incarnation of the Firefly brand does not intend to align with the entry level in terms of services. If Nio has not expanded on its technical sheet, it has already revealed some characteristics which are all markers with the future competitors of the Firefly. Thus, in addition to a reinforced security system (9 airbags for example), the small city car will have a panoramic roof and a very large trunk (92 L at the front via the Frunk, and 1250 L in total , seats folded).

Without a doubt, if the Firefly arrives in Europe, which is the stated wish of Nio boss William Li, it could overshadow models such as the electric R5 or the mini Cooper E. Car , even if the game of border taxes imposes a considerable increase in its price, it is difficult to imagine the entry-level Nio being priced at less than 30,000 euros. At this price, this is a model that will need to be monitored closely.
