The presidency's director of communications and information said it was a scam.
This website attributed to the Guinean President, General Mamadi Doumbouya, and claiming that he is offering a Christmas grant of 100,000 Guinean francs to his compatriots is a HOAX.
The announcement, made on December 13, 2024, says: “Hello! Welcome to President Mamady Doumbouya. 100,000 GNF Christmas cash grant for Guineans, on the occasion of Christmas this year, President Mamady Doumbouya is distributing 100,000 GNF to Guineans. Answer the questions below to claim 100,000 GNF cash prizes.”
The site contains a link allowing interested people to register for this alleged offer and is illustrated with a photo of President Mamadi Doumbouya.
PesaCheck has analyzed the content of this site and concluded that it is a hoax.
By clicking on the link, we were asked to answer questions regarding our nationality (Guinean or not), whether we celebrate Christmas, our gender and our age. We then received a congratulatory message and an invitation to begin. See screenshot below:
After clicking on “Start”, a second congratulatory message appeared, accompanied by an invitation to share the offer with five groups or 15 friends on WhatsApp, in order to receive the sum of 100,000 GNF.
PesaCheck then spoke, via WhatsApp, with the Director of Communication and Information of the presidency, Moussa Condé, who responded: “ It's a scam. Only the official channels of the Presidency disseminate reliable information on the initiatives of the Head of State ».
Official Guinean government communications channels have not reported such an offer.
Using the WhoIs identification tool, PesaCheck discovered that this site does not belong to President Doumbouya, but was registered by NameCheap, under the domain Xmas-25.xyz.
This site functions similarly to the one attributed to Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, as well as others that PesaCheck previously debunked and found to specialize in phishing scams.
PesaCheck checked a website attributed to Guinean President Mamadi Doumbouya that claimed to offer a Christmas grant of 100,000 Guinean francs to Guineans and found it to be a HOAX.
