Despite similar constructions, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 Pro have very different sound architectures. Headphones made in Cupertino include a single transducer with a well-kept secret, while those from South Korea opt for a two-way design using a bass/midrange transducer and a planar tweeter reserved for the treble. This distinction only has an effect on paper, because the two models demonstrate remarkable sound balance. However, some subtle differences remain for the finest ears.
While offering a fairly flattering sound reproduction, with slightly accentuated bass and treble, the AirPods Pro 2 demonstrate appreciable precision. Each frequency range is reproduced naturally, without major overflow, with an added edge that never seems to alter the integrity of the music. The brilliance of the brass is reproduced accurately, without veiling, and the bass is expressed with clarity and transparency, without excessive heaviness. Of course, the extremes are well enough balanced to let the instruments and voices evolving in the medium register express themselves clearly.
Well controlled despite more coloring, the sound signature of the Galaxy Buds3 Pro pales very slightly in comparison to that of the AirPods Pro 2. Their frequency response is, however, slightly more uneven with particular emphasis on the extreme bass. If this character has the merit of offering a lot of body to the restitution, this in no way prevents some artificial flickering which tends to taint the intelligibility of the medium. Regardless, the sound performance delivered by the Galaxy Buds3 Pro remains worthy of their status as high-end headphones.
With a better balance between treble and bass, AirPods Pro 2 manage to reproduce the nuances of the midrange with more precision. In this, they win this round.
