Home insurance, essential for protecting your home, could weigh even more heavily on household budgets in 2025. With the intensification of climatic phenomena, insurance premiums should experience a general increase, particularly impacting certain regions.
Forecasts for 2025 indicate an increase in home insurance rates of between 10% and 12%, reaching up to 15% in some cases. This increase is due to the “Natural Disasters” surcharge (Cat Nat), the rate of which will increase from 12% to 20%, generating a budget of 1.2 billion euros to compensate the victims. This trend confirms the growing pressure on household budgets, already impacted by the increases in previous years.
Natural disasters, main cause of the increase in home insurance
Natural disasters, which are increasing sharply, are the main cause of the increase in premiums. Between 2017 and 2021, climate disasters cost around 3.5 billion euros per year. This figure rose to 10.3 billion euros in 2022 and remains high in 2023. Phenomena such as floods, hail, storms and drought, which affects more than 10 million homes, exert significant financial pressure on insurers.
Not all regions are affected in the same way. The most exposed areas, such as Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, are experiencing greater increases, with an average increase of 13%, bringing the annual premium to 280 euros. Other regions such as Gard, Pas-de-Calais or Landes, often affected by floods or storms, also record prices higher than the national average.
In terms of large cities, Marseille is the most expensive with an average premium of 270 euros, followed closely by Paris at 265 euros. These variations are explained by local factors, notably the frequency of claims and the cost of repairs.
What are the prospects for households with home insurance?
Faced with this increase, households could be tempted to reduce their guarantees to reduce their premium, a risky solution in the event of a claim. Experts advise instead to compare offers and adapt coverage to real needs. Insurers, for their part, plan to continue to adjust their rates according to changes in claims and weather conditions.
In 2025, increases in home insurance rates remind us of the importance of anticipating the costs related to protecting your home. While climatic phenomena are increasing, solutions to cushion the financial impact remain limited, confronting households with difficult but necessary choices.
