Motorists and other drivers risk looking gloomy as the new year rolls around. Indeed, the price of a significant tax will increase in several regions from January 1, 2025. Bad news for the French whose budget is already suffering due to the increasing cost of living. What tax is this?

More bad news for motorists!

The tax landscape relating to automobiles can seem complex to motorists. And this, whether they are individuals or professionals. Indeed, between the purchase and use of a vehicle, several taxes come into playeach with its own rules and calculations. And the registration certificate (ex gray card) is one of them.

After a first increase in 2023, then a second in 2024, the price of the tax horse continues to increase in 2025. This year again, the increase in the registration certificate concerns four French regions.

Registering your vehicle will therefore cost you a little more depending on your region.

What are the regions in question?

It should be noted that the price of registration certificate is established according to various taxes. And including the regional tax that the regional councils determine. This is calculated based on the tax horse, which has increased in certain regions.

Note also that the regional tax is the third tax revenue behind VAT and the internal consumption tax on energy products (TICPE). Also, it is one of the main devices on which the regions can still play. However, this tax cannot exceed 60 euros.

This year, the increase in the registration certificate therefore concerns four regions of :

– in the region Normandiethe amount will increase from 46 euros to 60 euros per tax horse.
– the region Valley Centerfrom 55 euros to 60 euros.
– in the region Provence Alpes Côtes d’Azurfrom 51.20 euros to 59 euros.
– and in the region New Aquitaine from 45 euros to 53 euros.

motorists will therefore pay a high price

In Normandy, the price of the tax horse will therefore increase from 46 to 60 euros. Motorists in this region will therefore experience a increase of 30% and even 72% in two years.

This decision, which was the subject of a vote in October 2024, places Normandy among the most expensive regions of France regarding registration certificates.

How much is the cost of a registration document?

So that motorists understand the extent of these increases, let’s take the concrete example of a 6 horsepower vehicle in Normandy:

– With the old price (46 euros): 276 euros (46 x 6)
– With the new price (60 euros): 360 euros (60 x 6)

This increase of 84 euros represents a significant financial burden. And especially for households and young drivers. For motorists with more powerful vehicles, the bill will, obviously, be even higher. For example, a vehicle 10 tax horses will result in an increase of 140 euros.
