“Switzerland is not an island”, “an electricity agreement strengthens security of supply” and “results in lower costs”. These are the messages that Alpiq, the second largest electricity producer in Switzerland (behind Axpo) wanted to convey in a press briefing on Tuesday. The Vaud company, which produces a fifth of the country’s electricity, sees only advantages in the signing of an agreement between Bern and Brussels, which should be announced on Friday following long negotiations.

The Confederation and the European Union (EU) have been discussing such a text for around fifteen years. A solution was close in 2018, but it did not materialize and the agreement remained in limbo until negotiations resumed this year under the bilateral III.
