The big test of brands in end-of-year celebration mode: here is the best foie gras for your festive meals (2023 version)
Aspect du packaging : as a reference brand, we chose Labeyrie, like last year. It was a bit busy, with too much information on the package. On the other hand, the colors were well chosen, and the little extra: a small slicer to help with cutting. Aldi, Lidl and Intermarché also rely on a simple and classy black package. It was also very good at Delhaize, with special party packaging, more on the gold side. For Carrefour, the packaging doesn’t change from year to year, and it’s still just as ugly. Interesting for Colruyt: the distributor no longer makes its own foie gras in the Boni range, but relies on a private label, Louis Davignac, which we will therefore discover. The package was correct.
The big test for brands in party mode: foie gras has become unaffordable, so we’re hunting for bargains (around 2022)
Product appearance: at Delhaize, the smell was really pleasant, as well as the texture of the product, when cut. For Intermarché, the smell was much more discreet, but it still made you want it. The same goes for Carrefour. Quite the opposite at Lidl, with an average appearance and a too strong smell, which was more like pâté. At Aldi it was a little better, with a thinner nose. The same goes for Colruyt. For the big brand, it was true to its (good) reputation.
Nutritional value: Nutri-Score E for everyone.
Label readability: for Intermarché, it is readable but it lacks a table. The same goes for Delhaize. For Carrefour, it was really very good, as for Aldi and Colruyt. On the big brand side, however, it was written too small. For Lidl, this lacked information.
Taste : as usual, Delhaize offers an excellent product, with a well-balanced taste worthy of a major brand. For Intermarché, the texture was a little grainy, and it lacked finesse in the taste. It wasn’t bad, but… For Lidl, the taste was very strong and without any finesse this time. Disappointing. For Aldi, we found it better, with a more pleasant taste, but it was still of an average level. On the Carrefour side, it was really too light in taste, but it goes everywhere, shall we say. Nothing bad, but nothing to report, actually. The big disappointment in this test comes from Colruyt. Some of us actually spit out our mouthful because the taste was so strong and unpleasant. Finally, the big brand made us finish in style. It was very good, but Delhaize is at the same level.
Our consumer test of the week looks at foie gras: Colruyt failed! (2021 version)
Value for money: here are the prices in order for a 200 g portion: Carrefour (€19.12), Labeyrie (€15.98), Delhaize (€14.69), Intermarché (€11.69), Colruyt (€11. €22), Aldi (€9.49) and Lidl (€8.68).
