BBC angry after Apple Intelligence’s big blunders

Oops. The summary of notifications, one of the main functions of Apple Intelligence, was caught in the act of big lies by the BBC, angry and demanding accountability from Apple.

This is rather embarrassing for Applewhich is heavily promoting its artificial intelligence to sell new iPhones. One of the features ofApple Intelligence groups the notifications and summarizes them: on paper, a good idea (?) so as not to waste time reading between all the alerts.

The nonsense of Apple Intelligence

But Apple Intelligence sometimes goes too far and produces nonsense that is annoying to say the least. Users of the application BBC received a notification informing them that Luigi Mangione, the man suspected of the murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of an insurance company, had taken his own life. Obviously this is completely false and the original alert from the BBC didn’t say that at all.

Apple Intelligence wanted to do the right thing, but instead the AI misled the readers of the BBC. « It is essential to us that our audience can trust any information or journalism published on our behalf, including notifications », Explains a spokesperson for the group, which demanded accountability from Apple and above all, a solution.

The problem is not isolated. A notification of New York Times summarized by Apple Intelligence thus affirmed that Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested. Of course, this is false: the title of the original article referred to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court. The Israeli Prime Minister is currently still at large.

At a time when media are struggling for credibility, the misinformation generated by Apple Intelligence is highly problematic. The notification summary is available in the US, UK, and a handful of other countries. The tour of continental Europe will come next April. Time for Apple to tighten a few bolts…
