Global star of the automobile market in 2023, the Tesla Model Y has already lost its splendor. In France, he will undoubtedly return his crown to a former leader of the ranking.
The year 2024 has been somewhat schizophrenic for the electric car. Getting off to a flying start with the implementation, in France, of social leasing – this financing where the State put its hand in its pocket to obtain very low rents in LOA –, it then frankly calmed down. It is also surprising to note that between January and November of this year, almost as many cars were sold as in the same financial year of 2023. give or take a few dozen models: 260,992 versus 260,886. If we take into account the boost effect of social leasing at the start of the year, the observation is undeniable: times are getting tougher for electric vehicles. On the front line, the Tesla Model Y gently descends from its throne. After having won, to everyone’s surprise, the prestigious title of best-selling car in the world in 2023, all energies combined (!), the American SUV – produced in Germany when sold in Europe – is experiencing a year 2024 more complicated. In France, its sales fell by almost 27% compared to last year, with some 24,000 customers won over.. A result which still places it at the top of electric sales in France, but the lead it had has considerably diminished. The Model Y could lose its crown here this year.
The crown in the home straight?
Behind him is a Peugeot e-208, still in very good shape. More than 23,000 buyers have already fallen for it and, thanks to a few end-of-year discounts to close the balance sheets, the French company could well recover a crown dropped in 2022. Especially since Peugeot’s competitors have also fallen sharply this year, with Dacia Spring in the lead, the Romanian even struggling to stay in the top 20 due to changes in the rules in the allocation of the CO2 bonus for purchases in the course of the year.
Behind this very close duo, the Renault Mégane e-Tech is in 3rd place, ahead of a Fiat 500 in total loss of speed. An immediate echo of the regular production stops in Italy and the surprise reintroduction of a hybrid version while the Italian was born in 2020 with the firm desire to be only 100% electric. Everyone has a few weeks left to improve their brand as much as possible, even if the Peugeot seems well on its way to winning and once again becoming the best-selling electric car in France, give or take a few units.
