the new Ford Puma Gen-E

The city SUV market is particularly dynamic. Ford offers the Puma in its range, which is now available in a 100% electric version, to the great dismay of its competitors! It is the electric car that consumes the least energy in .

With the Peugeot e-2008, the Opel Mokka-e, the Citroën ë-C3 Aircross, the Alfa Romeo Junior Electtrica, the Jeep Avenger and the Fiat 600e, to say that Stellantis is banking on electric SUVs is an understatement. They are an integral part of the strategy of the group created under the leadership of Carlos Tavares. But these models will now have to deal with a bulky competitor, the Ford Puma Gen-E!

A genius idea?

The Ford Puma underwent a restyling in 2024, with a modernized version putting an end to the best engine under the hood of its compact SUV so far: the flexifuel.

This engine, which could run on E85, was the most economical in the range. But that was without counting on the arrival of a 100% electric engine in the Puma range.

Here is the Ford Puma Gen-E, using a 168 horsepower electric motor on the front axle. It is clear that no fuel can compete with the cost of an electric charge at home, between 2 and 4 euros to travel 100 km. Even E85 superethanol is more expensive.

Average autonomy

If Ford may have had a genius idea, the European part of the manufacturer from Detroit had to deal with the means at hand. There is no question of developing a completely new platform to launch the Ford Puma Gen-E, it uses that of the model presented in 2019.

Ford therefore installed a battery with a gross capacity of 52 kWh, which gives a net capacity of 43 kWh. Let's say it right away, this is not exceptional… The electric SUVs in the B segment of the Stellantis group use a battery of 54 kWh gross for 48.1 kWh net.

As a result, the Ford Puma Gen-E cannot offer as much WLTP autonomy as its main competitors. The WLTP range in the combined cycle announced by the manufacturer in its press release is 376 km. Too bad, the Stellantis group's SUVs manage to exceed 400 km of autonomy in WLTP value.

But fast charging and low consumption

On the other hand, the Ford Puma Gen-E stands out with an electricity consumption announced as low. To travel 100 km, Ford announces an electrical expenditure of 13.1 kWh on the WLTP cycle, taking into account the loss of energy during recharging.

For example, the Peugeot e-2008 announces 15.2 kWh per 100 km. With a battery of comparable capacities, the Ford Puma Gen-E would have outperformed the e-2008. Above all, it is one of the least consuming electric cars in Europe. A Tesla Model 3 does not do better, at 13.2 kWh / 100 km. Only the Lucid Air does better, with 13.0 kWh / 100 km in the Air Pure RWD 19″ version. The Puma Gen-E is therefore the electric car that consumes the least energy in France.

Like most of its competitors, the Ford Puma Gen-E has a maximum charging power of 100 kW. This allows it to go from 10% to 80% in 23 minutes and recover 124 km of autonomy in 10 minutes. Really interesting numbers.

A style slightly adapted to this electric motorization

An electric car does not have quite the same constraints as a thermal car, particularly in terms of cooling and aerodynamics. We therefore notice some developments for this Gen-E version.

The 100% electric Ford Puma features a new front grille inspired by the Ford Mustang Mach-E, aerodynamic rims and a redesigned rear spoiler. The aim is to reduce the air penetration coefficient.

Orders for the Ford Puma Gen-E are now open. The price of Ford's urban electric SUV is 33,990 euros in its entry-level version. The Premium finish is priced from 36,490 euros. The first deliveries to customers are expected in spring 2025.

The prices are therefore comparable to those charged at Stellantis for their electric SUVs, with a slight advantage for the Puma. The 136-horsepower Peugeot e-2008 currently starts at €36,280 (list price €39,250). In addition, being manufactured in Romania, in the Craiova factory, the Ford Puma Gen-E could benefit from the ecological bonus.
