Currently, the radars placed at the side of the road have one main function: to control the speed of motorists. If exceeded, the information collected by the radar is sent to the national processing center to produce the ticket. From next year, certain radars should be equipped with additional monitoring functions: detecting drivers who are not wearing seat belts, who have a phone in their hand, and who do not respect safety distances.

Sanctions that can mount quickly and strongly

These three new offenses can be detected by radars thanks to “ the appropriation of technology or innovative techniques, such as the extension of the use of artificial intelligence », according to Florence Guillaume, the interministerial delegate for road safety, in a memo obtained L’Argus. The 2025 budget contains an envelope of 46.3 million euros dedicated to investments in these new radars.

The absence of a public market launch, for the moment at least, and the artistic vagueness maintained around the algorithms that will be used by these AI radars leave a certain indecision surrounding this project. Nevertheless, the “ HP avalanche » predicted by the 40 Million Motorists association and the empty coffers of public finances strongly suggest that the government will want to implement these functions very quickly.

The fine of €135 (plus 3 license points) can be multiplied by the number of offenses detected by the radars: this can bring big returns. In the draft budget for 2025, which is the subject of all-out political negotiations, the government also plans “ an increase in desktop publishing and postage expenses attributable to the production and sending of notices of fines ».

Technically speaking, the detection of these offenses relies on systems that manufacturers are beginning to master. Idemia models are already able to detect the presence of a telephone while driving and the absence of a seat belt.

As for measuring safety distances, it will be up to the AI to sort the wheat from the chaff, which requires monitoring over the length (several tens of meters) in order to precisely determine the offense. Nothing impossible a priori.

Many radars already present on French roads can therefore be updated to detect these new offenses. Road Safety intends to integrate these AI functions into “ several hundred pieces of equipment “. However, the authorities must give approvals (or new approvals for current radars), which may take some time. In total, has 4,000 radars, plus 500 urban radars which will complete the system in the next fifteen months.
