Jaguar Land Rover recalls 2,100 SUVs over fire risk | Automotive News

The JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) group is recalling some 2,100 SUVs due to oil leaks that could potentially cause a fire in the engine compartment, which obviously poses a danger to the occupants, but also to other road users.

The number of units affected is not high, but the quantity of different models is significant. The campaign targets the Jaguar F-Pace (133), as well as the Range Rover (303), Range Rover Sport (500), Range Rover Velar (47), Discovery (235) and Defender (910) under the Land Rover brand.

In Canada, three Jaguar vehicles are affected, while 147 Land Rovers are targeted.

Fortunately, to simplify things, only products from the year 2024 are being recalled.

According to documents filed with the American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the equivalent of Transport Canada, the problem comes from the oil filter housing. The latter was apparently manufactured without respecting the standards that specified the use of a certain plastic… which was not used. Over time, the non-compliant plastic cracks, which causes oil to leak into the engine compartment. When this oil comes into contact with a hot surface, it can cause a fire.

Where the danger can be significant for road users is that oil can end up on the road. In large quantities, it can make the road as slippery as ice. Also, imagine a motorcycle encountering a trail of oil on the tarmac. The danger is real.

The good news is that a solution has been found and it is quite simple. Jaguar Land Rover will replace the oil filter housings and all affected/related components, all free of charge of course. Owners will be informed of the situation from 9th August.

Transport Canada adds that Jaguar recommends that owners stop driving their vehicle and contact a dealer if they notice an oil leak or if the engine oil light comes on.
