Geneva: “It’s a disaster at the airport, suitcases are piling up”

The holidays are ending with a bitter taste for some passengers at Geneva airport. “It’s a disaster. There’s luggage everywhere on arrival. Some have been there for two days. It’s not safe,” said a woman from Vaud returning from New York on Monday morning.

For her part, she encountered the opposite problem. Her suitcase did not arrive at its destination. “I landed at 10am and I’m still waiting for my luggage which is supposed to come from Paris at 4pm. I waited for over 2 hours in line for claims.” As the hours went by, things got worse. “The Paris-Geneva flight was delayed. Finally, it will be 4:55pm. This day is endless!” Early in the evening, the almost thirty-year-old still had no news of her belongings. “They were not on the plane. I’m going back to the counter to find out more.” After making inquiries: “it won’t be for tonight…” After a day of waiting, the vacationer returned empty-handed.

Geneva Airport confirms that there are indeed “a certain number of baggage carts awaiting delivery”. A task that falls to the ground handling companies, Swissport and Dnata.

According to Swissport, this situation is the result of “the weather-related disruptions that are currently occurring throughout Europe. In recent days, Geneva airport, as well as others, have had to be temporarily closed due to heavy rain or thunderstorms. These irregularities are causing numerous flight delays and cancellations and therefore delays between the arrivals of passengers and their suitcases.”

The company states that “a lot of luggage had to be sent to Geneva and has yet to be returned to its owners.” In addition to the weather problems, Geneva air traffic was also disrupted last Wednesday due to flooding in the basement of the Skyguide control center. Fourteen flights had to be cancelled.
