New car sales fall in June but it’s not so bad

After almost two years of uninterrupted growth, this is the second consecutive month of decline for the new automobile market in June 2024. 181,712 passenger cars were sold in our country this last month, a drop of 4.7% per year. compared to the same month last year. Except that there was also two working days lesswhich fully explains this drop. Because with the same number of working days, we would rather be at +4.7% of sales compared to June 2023.

The drop (in the raw figures, therefore) concerns all major groups with a 3.8% drop for Renault (+1.3% for the Renault brand but -16.4% for Dacia) and still -13. 2% for Stellantis (Peugeot at -15.2%). Here too, these two fewer working days will obviously have to be taken into account.

On the other hand, the downward trend in sales of new electric vehicles is confirmed. Of course, the figures have nothing to do with those of Germany, where these vehicles are completely unscrewing. But with 16% of the total share of new vehicles sold in June 2024, the electric cars move backwards slightly compared to the same month last year (or April and May 2024). We also note a slight increase in sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles over the same period (8% compared to 7% in the two previous months).

The share of new electric car sales fell slightly in June 2024.

Hybridization continues to gain market share

Over the first six months of the year, gasoline engines largely retained the preference of French customers with 32.1% of sales. But sales of cars with “normal” hybridization and mild hybridization continue to grow. They now represent 17.6 and 13.1% of the total, compared to 13.6 and 9.4% over the first six months of 2023. Diesel continues to decline (7.9%) and plug-in hybrids remain in slight decline (8.1%) even if they could ultimately progress over the whole year if the trend continues in the remaining months.

Peugeot 208 in the lead, Mégane E-Tech ahead among electrics in June

Over the first six months of 2024, the Peugeot 208 remains well ahead of the new market with 51,029 units sold (ahead of the Renault Clio and the Dacia Sandero). Note that in June, it is Renault Mégane E-Tech which sold the most electric cars (3,257 units) ahead of the Tesla Model Y (2,155 units) and Model 3 (1,821 cars). It remains to be seen how these sales of new electric cars will evolve from July if the taxes on Chinese models apply as planned within the European Union…
