Appointed in 2010 at the head of the Autonomous Port of Liège, the general director Emile-Louis Bertrand, normally retired in 2021, had seen his mandate extended until 2024. But in the spring of 2023, he was disembarked before this term. He was criticized for his “old-fashioned” management style against a backdrop of internal conflicts and certain management problems, notably documents not validated by the board of directors chaired by mayor Willy Demeyer.

Currently, it is Yves Demeffe, former official of the Court of Auditors who still holds the ad interim position.

Yesterday, in the Walloon parliament, the Minister of Mobility, François Desquesnes, affirmed the government’s desire to modernize the management of autonomous ports: “ We have older ports – I think the Autonomous Port of Liège was created by a law of 1937 – and we have other much more recent ports, with other modes of governance. As you know, in the Regional Policy Declaration, there is the desire to modernize the management of autonomous ports. It is therefore a work in progress.

With a port area of 382 hectares, where nearly a hundred companies are located, 33 port areas and 27 km of quay, the Autonomous Port of Liège is the 1st Belgian river port and 3rd European river port.
