It’s almost the end of misspelled names in Swiss passports

Excellent news for all Swiss and residents of the country named Kačić or Perić. Their names will cease to be misspelled on official documents issued by the Confederation from November 11. This is due to the commissioning of the new computerized civil status register. All special characters in European languages can be entered correctly, with a few exceptions. The name must first be adapted by the software before being entered into official documents with the correct spelling.

Those who wish to modify their valid documents will have to wait until January 1, 2025, while Confederation staff get used to the new system. In addition, the operation will cost 75 francs per individual and 100 francs for a family. It will nevertheless be free when the registration in civil status must be modified in any case, for example upon marriage or the birth of a child.

For any request for new documents, there will be no additional costs. “Once the declaration has been processed by the civil status office, the people concerned can order their identity card and passport with the new spelling,” explains David Rüetschi, head of the Federal Civil Status Office. Thanks to the interfaces in place between the civil status register and other registers, the appropriate name is automatically transmitted to residents’ control, social insurance and the State Secretariat for Migration.”
